A fantastic product

We have seen for ourselves that Sri Lankans enjoy cheese in all its forms.

However, it remains a rare commodity, mostly imported, expensive and therefore inaccessible to most families.

We are also working to enable sustainable coexistence between humans and elephants.

The tests carried out in 2024 and 2025 were conclusive, and we are now able to produce cheese.

The techniques used were learned in Savoie and adapted to conditions in Sri Lanka.

By supporting our initiative, you are contributing to the protection of the village of BATUYAYA and the conservation of elephants.

We are currently developing a community cheese factory in BATUYAYA (SIGIRIYA).

This project was born out of an essential need: to create new sources of sustainable income in a village heavily impacted by the presence of wild elephants.

Every night, the elephants cross through the village, destroying crops and depriving farmers of sleep, thereby undermining families' livelihoods and fuelling tensions between humans and local wildlife.

We trained our first apprentice.

Our next goal: Tile a workspace and launch the business (Budget: €2,000).

A replicable project

Our local cheese production project enables us to:

  • create a ‘superfood’ that is both nutritious and tasty;

  • offer a low-cost product that is accessible to as many people as possible;

  • promote the emergence of small, sustainable and autonomous local businesses;

  • create jobs for the most disadvantaged populations;

  • develop expertise through simplified learning based on skills transfer.

In light of this situation, the creation of a local cheese factory represents an innovative economic alternative.

Drawing on sustainable expertise, it makes it possible to:

  • manufacture a high value-added product,

  • diversify income,

  • reduce dependence on vulnerable crops, and

  • promote more peaceful coexistence between residents and elephants.
